Irony on Prime Time: Globo’s Selective Memory Strikes Again

Thisweek, as Jair Bolsonaro received an official court summons in what critics called a "fake ICU stunt," Globo Repórter decided to revisit a golden oldie: the 1989 Jornal Nacional coverage that blatantly manipulated facts to favor Fernando Collor. The timing? Impeccable. Just as Collor’s arrest for corruption resurfaced in public memory, Globo served a lukewarm mea culpa, conveniently sidestepping its own role in manufacturing his rise. Funny how history repeats itself when the network needs to polish its progressive credentials.

Back in ’89, Globo’s infamous debate edit transformed Collor into a TV hero while burying Lula’s responses. Decades later, the same network now feigns introspection, as if shocked by its own past. Yet, here we are again, watching Globo’s gears shift smoothly into pro-Lula mode as 2026 looms. The "mistakes" they admit to are always the ones that no longer serve them. Coincidence? Or just the same old playbook?

While Bolsonaro’s legal drama unfolds, Globo’s sudden nostalgia for journalistic "self-criticism" feels less like repentance and more like strategic positioning. After all, why dwell on recent biases when you can atone for ancient sins? The message is clear: the network’s allegiance lies with whoever fits the narrative of the moment. And right now, Lula’s rehabilitation as the "electable" statesman needs a little help from Brazil’s most powerful media machine.

So here’s to Globo: forever rewriting history, one selective apology at a time. Will they ever admit their role in shaping today’s political chaos? Don’t hold your breath. But one thing’s certain, when 2026 arrives, they’ll already have a favorite. And the cycle continues.
